M.Sc. En2

M.Sc.  in Energy Engineering  En2 (120 ECTS)

The M.Sc. in Energy Engineering (En2) has started on Sept 2015 receiving the heritage of previous  M.Sc. in Environmental & Energy Engineering that will be no longer be available.

The M.Sc.  in “Energy Engineering” is aimed at Italian and foreign students and offers a good level of interdisciplinary preparation for working in professional, industry and research at international level in the field of the sustainable energy production, conversion, transportation, storage and saving.

Here is a course presentation in Italian and the corresponding one in English.

The official course Flyer (in English) is finally available here.

The M.Sc.  is structured in order to respect the Italian Ministry of University and Research Law (MIUR – D.M 17 /2010)  and it belongs to the Italian Degree Class (LM30), Nuclear and Energy Engineering.

Graduates in “Energy Engineering will have:

– an adequate knowledge of the theoretical and scientific aspects of the basics of engineering;
– a good knowledge of the theoretical and scientific aspects of the disciplines of engineering,  specifically in relation to those thermal, mechanical, chemical and electrical energy;
– expertise in advanced engineering technologies consistent with sustainable development in the energy sector, for the realization of production processes with low environmental impact, for the use of renewable resources and in the energy saving technologies;

What You Will Learn

The M.Sc.  in Energy Engineering offers a unique international experience. The modules are taught in English, and in strict cooperation with industries and external research bodies.

The En2 curriculum studiorum includes the following contents:

Methodological topics: fluid dynamics, combustion processes & emissions control, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics of multiphase systems, models & methods for environmental & energy systems, mainly offered during the first year.

Applicative topics: sustainable energy and resources (wind, hydro, solar, geothermal, biofuels, waste to energy, fuel cells), power systems control & optimization, Electric energy production and control  .

How You Will Learn

applying knowledge and understanding

Graduates in “Energy Engineering” will have the ability to solve complex problems and to devise, plan, design and manage processes and systems, through the use of models and experiments also complex, they can critically evaluate the data obtained .
Graduates will have the ability to investigate the application of new technologies with particular reference to energy production sustainability.
These skills will be acquired during the courses, including field activities and project activities and through the preparation of the Master’s thesis, consisting of a research project or a complex engineering design project. These skills will be tested through examinations and the degree final examination.

making judgements

Graduates in “Energy Engineering” will be able to choose the most appropriate technologies and methodologies to identify, analyze and solve complex problems related to the production, conversion and storage of energy and the development of sustainable production processes. Graduates will also assess the consequences, including ethical and moral, of their design choices in terms of its social impact at the global level and not only territorial. Graduates in “Energy Engineering” will also keep abreast of methods, techniques and specialized tools in their field, will plan their work responsibilities with regard to taking their skills and their role, will also enter positively in the workplace and in international working groups.

communication skills

Graduates in “Energy Engineering” will be able to process and communicate data, information and knowledge regarding their work with technical and scientific competence, to both specialists in their field, and experts in other fields. They will be able to explain energy issues including the aspectes related to sustainability, renewable resource exploitation and energy saving to non-expert stakeholders (population, public opinion, media). Since all training is provided in the English language, graduates have the skills to consult the scientific literature and draw and explain complex technical reports in English. The assessment of communication skills occurs in the written and oral examination by the discussion of projects and technical activities in the field and during the exposure of group work, which cab take the form of a debate between the various groups. The final test also provides for the preparation of the M.Sc. thesis and its public dissertation and therefore represents a crucial moment in which the student develops and manifests their communication skills, which are evaluated in the specific by the Degree Board.

learning skills

Graduates in “Energy Engineering” at the end of the M.Sc. Degree Course will have developed capacity for learning and understanding of texts, documents, national and international scientific literature on the sector and related issues. Also they will be able to update independently their  methods, technologies and tools covering the topics of the sector and will identify and distinguish the sources of information necessary for their reliable and professional updating.
They will finally have acquired the knowledge and methodological tools necessary to undertake studies of higher order, such as PhD or Second Level Master Degree with a high degree of autonomy in the international arena. The achievement of the learning ability is directly verified by the tutor in the individual interviews and through some training activities involving the development of engineering projects on topics related but addressed in terms of conversion efficiency enhancement, emission reduction and energy saving.
