Nuclear Monitoring Network

In Italy the areas subject to monitoring were selected according to their importance for pollution control, likely routes of access into Italian territory of radioactive contamination resulting from accident at a nuclear installation abroad.

REMRAD Monitoring network:
This network consists of seven sampling stations, capable of analyzing particulate air pollution. Stations are connected automatically to the control centre located at the Emergency Room ISPRA, from which the operators can perform reading  as well as storage and evaluation of incoming data. In the event of a nuclear accident, they have the objective of confirming the information made available systems worldwide, particularly in relation to the possibility of nuclear contamination of the Italian territory. Stations are located here:

Tarvisio (UD);  Bric della Croce (TO); Vimodrone (MI); Capo Caccia (SS); Monte Cimone (MO); Monte S. Angelo (FG); Cozzo Spadaio (SR).

RESORAD Monitoring network:
It is a network that is responsible for monitoring environmental radioactivity in air, water and food, aimed at calculating the dose to the population. This network is essential for emergency situations but also in standard conditions for sampling data and to evaluate the performance of radioactivity models. The network belongs to the system ISPRA and data are historically collected.

GAMMA Monitoring Network:
This network, as well as the REMRAD network, was created by ISPRA and, in the event of a nuclear accident,  has the objective of confirming the information made available systems worldwide, particularly in relation to the possibility of nuclear contamination of the Italian territory.
The network consists of 64 detectors of gamma dose in air, placed in sites  throughout the Italian territory and allows the assessment of real-time coverage of geographical areas involved. The detectors provide the observation of weak variations of the radiometric measurement of natural background, not necessarily related to accidental scenarios. They are coupled with rain sensors and allow a preliminary analysis and discrimination of signals. All the stations are connected automatically to the control center located at the Emergency Room ISPRA.
